Today we pause in solemn remembrance of a true American hero, World War II veteran Lester Schrenk, who passed away at the remarkable age of 102. Born on November 16, 1923, Lester answered his nation’s call to service on his 19th birthday in November 1942, enlisting in the United States Army Air Forces at a time when the world was engulfed in conflict and freedom itself hung in the balance.
Lester served as a ball turret gunner aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress, occupying what was widely regarded as one of the most perilous positions in aerial combat. Encased in the small, exposed belly turret beneath the aircraft, he faced enemy fire with extraordinary courage and unwavering resolve. Assigned to the 92nd Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, he flew ten dangerous combat missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. Each sortie demanded immense bravery, discipline, and faith in his fellow airmen.
In 1944, during a mission over Denmark, his aircraft, “Pot O’ Gold,” was shot down. In the face of chaos and mortal danger, Lester demonstrated remarkable presence of mind. He exited the turret—an action that ultimately saved his life, as many gunners tragically perished when unable to escape during crashes. He bailed out of the stricken aircraft, survived a brutal landing, and was captured by enemy forces.
What followed was a harrowing chapter of endurance and resilience. Lester spent 15 months as a prisoner of war, enduring harsh interrogations, severe deprivation, and the constant uncertainty of captivity. He survived the infamous 800-mile forced march in the dead of winter—later known as the “death march”—where those too weak to continue were mercilessly shot. Through unimaginable hardship, he persevered.
Lester Schrenk’s life stands as a testament to courage, sacrifice, and steadfast patriotism. His generation bore the weight of history and secured the freedoms we cherish today.
