Police are continuing their investigation into a deadly shooting that occurred Tuesday in Muskegon Heights, with additional gunfire reported nearby while officers were still on scene.
The initial shooting took place in an alley between East Hovey Avenue and East Hume Avenue, near South Getty Street. Authorities confirmed that one person died as a result of that shooting. The victim’s family confirmed the death to News 8, though no further identifying details have been released at this time. Police have not yet shared information regarding what may have led up to the incident.
As investigators worked the scene, the situation escalated when more gunshots rang out in the surrounding area. News 8 crews on location reported hearing multiple shots and screams nearby. Shortly afterward, several officers quickly entered their patrol vehicles and responded to a second location.
Authorities were seen heading toward a nearby intersection close to a small housing complex, where additional evidence markers were placed. It remains unclear whether the subsequent gunfire is directly connected to the initial deadly shooting. Police have not yet confirmed any additional injuries or arrests related to the second incident.
Residents in the area described a chaotic and frightening scene. Sean Kinney said he and his wife were inside their home when they heard gunfire exchanged “back and forth” nearby. According to Kinney, his wife immediately ducked for cover. Looking out the window, he said he observed multiple individuals exchanging gunfire.
“I just started looking out the window and there was a guy running from the alley down this way,” Kinney said. “He even tripped on some stuff over here and got back up, turned around and started firing again. The people down in the alley were firing on him and then he just got into a vehicle and took off.”
The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the sequence of events and identify those involved. Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the subsequent gunfire to come forward as they continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
